We’ve reached the final step in our “Top Gun: Maverick” journey. The movie is set to make its streaming service debut on Dec. 22, 2022, on Paramount+ after a long theatrical run and overwhelming success with its digital release on home video.
You were expecting Netflix? Nope, this shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone who’s been paying attention, since all the Paramount Pictures movies have gone straight to Paramount+ for the past couple of years.
If it’s any consolation, a Paramount+ subscription also gets you access to every episode of “SEAL Team,” every “Star Trek” movie and series ever made, all the “NCIS” and “CSI” you can handle, and current hit movies like “Smile” and “The Lost City.” Paramount+ subscriptions cost $4.99/month for the ad-supported version and $9.99/month for the ad-free version, but right now new users can get a limited-time deal and pay $24.97 for a year of ad-supported and $49.99 for ad-free streaming.
If you’re not interested in a Paramount+ subscription, you can still buy or rent a Digital release of the movie or even buy a physical copy on 4K, Blu-ray or DVD.
“Top Gun: Maverick” was perhaps the biggest movie surprise of 2022. After two years of delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was a massive phenomenon when it finally reached theaters this past Memorial Day weekend. The movie played for months and has grossed $716 million here in the United States and even more in the rest of the world, for a total of $1.487 billion worldwide. That makes it the 11th-biggest movie of all time and the biggest military-themed movie of all time.
The movie was so well-received that Hollywood insiders are now predicting that “Top Gun: Maverick” will be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and that Tom Cruise (Pete “Maverick” Mitchell) will be a serious contender for a Best Actor nomination, and Miles Teller (Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw) will be in the mix for Best Supporting Actor. There’s even talk of nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Original Song. That’s in addition to what should be some definite wins in categories like Best Editing, Best Sound and strong possibilities of wins for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
As families come together for the holiday, “Top Gun: Maverick” will be there to help everyone focus on a movie everyone can enjoy and avoid the awkward conversations that can ruin the season. Thanks, Maverick. You’ve come through again.
