As we enter the final month of the summer, the buzz around several fall season movies continues to grow. Nevertheless, this year has already been busy with a range of movies worth celebrating as cinema continues to push for a post-Covid comeback. Among those, the best movies of the year are the least predictable: From “Nope” to “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” filmmakers are serving up original ideas all the more exciting because nobody saw them coming. Whether or not these achievements remain visible through Oscar season is a different story.
In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson share their lists of their favorite films of the year, including some overlaps and a few under-appreciated gems, while touching on their awards potential. They also discuss some of the top entertainment stories of the year, from the Netflix stock slump to the recent cancellation of “Batgirl” by Warner Bros. Discovery, the box office success of “Top Gun: Maverick,” the fallout of “The Slap,” and major changes to Academy leadership.
