As the month of July comes to a close, Hulu has released its exciting and dynamic line-up of films making its way to the streaming giant in August. The platform is famous for amassing a sensational selection of movies and television shows, with the site constantly acquiring both new and classic beloved titles for their diverse library. There are a few highly-buzzed about flicks set to make their premieres, with the thrilling Predator prequel Prey arguably garnering the most widespread anticipation as audiences await their release.
Many of the cinema’s adored staples are also heading to Hulu, such as the fan-favorite Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rom-com The Wedding Singer and Sam Raimi superhero trilogy Spider-Man, with the latter being highly-lucrative and groundbreaking pictures that helped redefine the modern superhero genre. Whether you’re in the mood for a taut psychological thriller, thought-provoking drama or action-packed western, the platform is sure to satisfy your needs. These are the best movies coming to Hulu in August 2022.
In his feature directorial debut, comedian Jerrod Carmichael appears alongside Christopher Abbott in the 2022 black comedy On the Count of Three, which stars the performers as longtime close friends Val and Kevin, who together make a suicide pact and set out to celebrate the last day of their lives. The edgy picture had its worldwide premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where critics raved about Carmichael's skills both in front of and behind the camera; in their review, Digital Trends declared that, “Carmichael takes the unhappiness of these men seriously. That’s the precise needle the movie threads: It finds comedy in two people at the very end of their ropes without turning their depression into the butt of the joke.”
The Oscar-winning 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan depicts the New York City Ballet company’s production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, centering on the rivalry between its two main leads cast to portray the innocent White Swan and the sensual Black Swan: Nina Sayers (an incredible Natalie Portman) and Lily (Mila Kunis).
The two brilliant actresses trained for six intense months in order to attain a ballerina’s physique and develop their dancing skills, with Kunis commenting on the rigorous process, “I did ballet as a kid like every other kid does ballet. You wear a tutu and you stand on stage and you look cute and twirl. But this is very different because you can't fake it. You can't just stay in there and like pretend you know what you're doing. Your whole body has to be structured differently."
Sam Raimi directed the 2002 superhero film Spider-Man, based on the beloved Marvel Comics character that serves as an origin story for the academically-gifted Peter Parker who is bitten by a genetically engineered spider that grants him superhuman powers. The first installment of Raimi’s trilogy touts an outstanding cast of then rising stars, including Tobey Maguire as the titular character, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco and seasoned performer Willem Dafoe, and took over 25 years to finally be made after experiencing production hell.

To tackle the iconic role of Spider-Man and embody Parker, Maguire drew inspiration from his own childhood growing up, having stated, “I felt like I was an outsider. I think what happened to me made me develop this street sense of watching people and working out what made them tick, wondering whether I could trust them or not.”
Based on the popular Predator franchise, the 2022 sci-fi action flick Prey serves as the fifth installment and prequel to the original four, delving into the backstory of the terrifying extraterrestrial species as it faces off against the fierce Comanche warrior Naru as she fights to protect her tribe 300 years ago.
The pulse-pounding picture will reveal how the Predator first came to Earth and began its long reign of terror upon mankind, and will feature both an English and Comanche dub version. Director Dan Trachtenberg set out to embrace the roots of the enduring franchise, having stated: “The ingenuity of a human being who won't give up, who's able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force."
Adored dream team Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore captured the hearts of audiences when they headlined the 1998 romantic comedy The Wedding Singer, which features the former actor as the titular character Robbie Hart as he falls in love with waitress Julia Sullivan in 1985. Writer Tim Herlihy was further inspired by the radio show Lost in the ‘80s after Sandler approached the creator about a film idea centering on a wedding singer who gets left at the altar.

Herlihy wanted to include a female perspective that many of Sandler’s past films lacked, ultimately casting the delightful Barrymore in the role; the actress had reached out to Sandler with a desire to work together on a project, having expressed they were “cinematic soulmates” before they ever appeared on film together.
Adapted from the Angie Thomas young adult novel of the same name, the 2018 drama The Hate U Give stars Amandla Stenberg as 16-year-old Starr Carter, a high school student from a predominantly black neighborhood who attends an elite, mainly white prep school and witnesses the fatal shooting of her beloved best friend Khalil by a police officer.
The emotionally-gripping drama premiered at the Toronto Film Festival where it was lauded by critics for its exceptional performances and screenplay; Stenberg went on to win the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. The Hate U Give currently holds a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, with Empire Magazine writing, “A sophisticated adaptation of a hugely important book that adeptly handles its daunting themes, and provides a platform for a star-making performance from Amandla Stenberg.”
David Frankel directed the famed 2006 comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada, which is based on the Lauren Weisberger novel that follows college graduate and aspiring journalist Andy Sachs as she ventures to New York City where she is given the opportunity to be the junior personal assistant to high-profile fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly. With a dynamite ensemble cast including the legendary Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, the dramedy was a critical and commercial hit, earning over $320 million and nabbing Streep a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
The Devil Wears Prada has had a lasting impact on pop culture, with Variety declaring in retrospect: “Like many instant classics, Prada benefited from perfect timing. It marked the beginning of the democratization of the fashion industry—when the masses started to pay attention to the business of what they wore."
Inspired by a true story, the 2022 Western drama Hostile Territory centers on former P.O.W. and Union soldier Jack Calgrove as he valiantly fights to be reunited with his three young children after their mother passes away and they are sent on an orphan train into enemy territory. Calgrove partners up with a fellow soldier, freed slave and fierce Native American warriors in order to stop the train and bring what’s left of his family home.
The action flick is loosely based on a troop of early 1900s Native American sharpshooters who aided a group of white settlers in their quest to intercept an orphan train, serving as an incredibly inspirational tale of heroism. Hostile Territory is an emotional and endearing film that showcases the unbreakable bond between a father and his children, and the lengths people will go to for loved ones.
