This is a highly selective and very scientific list. (JK!)
The most important rule of comedy is timing, and who has the time to waste scrolling Netflix looking for a comedy to watch? Use this list of the best comedy movies on Netflix to help you pick what to watch and live your best, funniest life. The streaming service is always trying to push their latest original release to the top of the app, and sometimes that’s great! But there’s so much more than the thing Of The Moment.
*Stefon on SNL voice* Netflix has everything: romantic comedies, classic comedies, cult comedies, indie comedies, science fiction comedies, and even dark comedies. You don’t even need to watch a narrative film to get your LOL on. Sure, there are so many good stand-up specials, comedy specials like Oh Hello on Broadway, The Sack Lunch Bunch, and whatever Inside is. (Brilliant, is what it is.) But this is for the movie-lovers. Let me remind you which of your faves is on the ‘flix, or recommend a hidden gem you may have missed.
“Can men and women be friends” seems like a silly question in 2022, where we have a broader understanding of gender and sexuality and attraction—but it was also a silly question in 1989 because it’s obvious Harry and Sally are more than friends. Special shoutout to the late Carrie Fisher who gives one of her funniest performances as Sally’s bestie Marie.

This year 2000 comedy about an FBI agent who goes undercover at the Miss United States beauty pageant as a contestant is a sleepover classic. Sandra Bullock is so funny. Benjamin Bratt is so hot. Reverse that if you want. Who could ask for anything more?

John Hughes’ hangout movie about three friends who ditch school and enjoy everything that life and the city of Chicago have to offer is a near perfect movie and a near perfect comedy. It highlights how good teenagers are at manipulating adults (you have the energy to get away with a lot when you don’t have bills to pay) and the importance of slowing down.

Sometimes called Ibiza: Love Drunk, this is one of my favorite Netflix hidden gems. It’s a staycation in movie form. The premise is super simple: an overworked young woman gets sent on a business trip to Spain and her two best friends tag along. There are so many jokes, hijinks, and sexy adventures packed into this 95-minute movie it’s ridiculous.

Before Fire Island took us on vacation, Bridget Jones’ Diary modernized Pride and Prejudice in the London workplace. Renee Zellweger is an iconic messy girl. It doesn’t get better than Colin Firth and Hugh Grant as rival love interests in this movie.

Every character in Tina Fey’s teen satire is so funny that we end up emulating the so-called villains just as much as the so-called heroes. We’re not supposed to like the Plastics, but how can you not quote them and dress up as them for Halloween?! How can you not feel empathy towards them on your umpteenth rewatch? That’s the power of the movies and the power of comedy.

Auteur alert! Paul Thomas Anderson’s nostalgic comedy about the “Golden Age of Porn” is very funny and critically acclaimed.

Love What We Do In The Shadows, Our Flag Means Death and, uhhhhh, THOR? You gotta see Taika Waititi’s coming-of-age comedy about a foster child who runs away from his foster home and ends up bonding with his foster dad in the woods. It has Wes Anderson vibes and Waititi’s signature dry humor.

Between this movie and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Netflix nearly single-handedly brought back the romantic comedy in 2018. I know y’all were thirsting over Glen Powell after Top Gun: Maverick. If you haven’t seen this super-funny movie, what are you waiting for?!

This surreal, dark comedy stars LaKeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson. I don’t want to say too much about it, because you kind of need to watch without being spoiled. Fair warning, Armie Hammer is in this movie, so if that means you aren’t into watching, fair enough!

The film, based on a play by Robert Harling, does get pretty dang dramatic at times. But the rest is all laughs with the gals and an absolute staple for Southern girls and, well, everyone.

Remember how good the first movie is? The subsequent sequels IMHO never stood up to strength of the original film’s premise—a teenage girl’s little sister mails the love letters she’s been writing to various crushes and keeping in a box, prompting a fake dating situation with the most perfect boy ever crafted by a female writer. It really deserves a place in the romcom Hall of Fame.

Best enjoyed when you’re about 10-12 years old, this is a classic comedy that has shaped senses of humor for multiple generations. It takes the very serious tales of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and the Holy Grail and turns them into a very silly adventure.

Spike Lee’s 1986 comedy was reborn as a Netflix original series over 20 years later, but you don’t have to leave the streaming service to watch the original film. It’s a romantic comedy about a free-spirited woman with multiple partners who want her to commit to them.

The Coen brothers don’t have a ton of their dark comedies on Netflix, and some film bros are certainly going to be upset that I chose this film instead of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, but would that it were so simple! It’s my list! Hail, Caesar! allows it’s star-studded cast to get silly. There’s a Tilda Swinton gag I think about constantly, and a ton of quotable jokes.

We see a lot of movies about kids who were inspired by the music of The Beatles, or Elvis, or even Bruce Springsteen… but what about the ladies? Willowdean is a teenage girl who enters a beauty contest to spite her mother and grew up idolizing the music of Dolly Parton. It’s a hilarious, charming teen comedy and one of the best Netflix originals. Plus, Jennifer Aniston!
WATCH NOW
The sci-fi comedy spawned a handful of sequels and still holds up as a comedy and an action movie. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are a classic, iconic duo. Also, the theme song is a banger!
