Audiences must’ve learned that the Keanu Reeves-led action franchise John Wick will be taking its leave from HBO Max at the end of the month, as users are flocking to it in droves, quickly placing the first film in the Top 10 category on the streamer’s most-watched list. A film that would launch a franchise, the 2014 gun-fu movie has certainly lived up to expectations and gained a massive following. For those trying to catch the full story before it leaves streaming, HBO Max currently has the entire John Wick trilogy for your binging pleasure.
Keanu Reeves stars as the titular assassin, John Wick. When we first meet John, he’s grieving the unexpected loss of his wife who left him a precious beagle puppy to hold onto and love in her absence. But, when bad guy Iosef Tarasov brings further tragedy into John’s life, the skilled killer has no choice but to get back into the business of vengeful slayings.
To say that the first film found a wide audience of loyal fans would be a massive understatement. Since that debut feature dropped almost one decade ago, Keanu Reeves has been busy bringing the people what they want – more John Wick. In 2017, the story continued with John Wick: Chapter 2 which saw the eponymous assassin pull his guns out of their holsters all over again to take on a new threat.
And then, there was 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum which flipped the tables and saw the hitman outrunning other esteemed killers, as a bounty was now placed on his head. In just two months, we’ll see Keanu Reeves go in guns a-blazin’ in his John Wick: Chapter 4 return. The film will be a globe-trotting adventure with John Wick still outrunning those who hope to collect a hefty bounty.
The popularity of the franchise has grown into something even bigger with two side projects to spawn from the original films. On the big screen, we’ll see Ana de Armas star in Ballerina as a dancer who moonlights as an assassin thirsty to rain down vengeance on the killers who wiped out her family.
On the smaller screen, audiences are gearing up to travel back in time to 1970s New York City in The Continental when a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) – a character made famous in the franchise by Ian McShane – is just taking over the titular hotel that serves as a safe haven for assassins. While Keanu Reeves isn’t expected to make an appearance in the John Wick spinoff, the limited series will also star Mel Gibson, Peter Greene, Nhung Kate, Katie McGrath, Jessica Allain, Jeremy Bobb, and Adam Shapiro.
Whether it’s your first time seeing the films or your 100th, you’re going to want to get over to HBO Max to get your Keanu Reeves fix before the entire John Wick franchise leaves on January 31. While we can expect them to show up somewhere else for streaming in the future, it’s unclear where the films’ new home will be.
