After years of anticipation, Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic Elvis has finally arrived.
Starring Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll—aka Elvis Presley—this new Elvis movie promises to be a wild, fantastical ride. This is, after all, Baz Luhrmann—the same filmmaker who brought us Romeo + Juliet (1996), Moulin Rouge! (2001), and The Great Gatsby (2013). There’s no doubt that Elvis will likely be equally bizarre and divisive. But that’s what makes it interesting, right?
Also starring Tom Hanks, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Olivia DeJonge, Luke Bracey, Natasha Bassett, David Wenham, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Xavier Samuel, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, this is one summer movie that you don’t want to miss. Read on to find out where to watch the Elvis movie and when to expect Elvis on streaming.
UPDATE 8/4/2022: The Elvis movie is coming to digital—but not to HBO Max—on August 9, 2022. You’ll be able to buy the movie for $24.99 or rent it for 48 hours for $19.99, on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, and more. The movie will be released on 4K, Blu-ray™ and DVD on September 13.
But, according to a report from Indiewire, the movie will not be coming to HBO Max on the same date. The same report also quoted Luhrmann as saying the movie would not be on the streamer until “fall,” though no source for the quote was provided. If true, that goes against the previously announced plan for Warner Bros. to release its 2022 theatrical slate on HBO Max after 45 days in theaters.
Decider reached out to Warner Media for clarification and was told that movies’ HBO Max release date would now be on a “case by case basis,” rather than a strict 45-day theatrical window. Decider was also told Elvis would eventually be on HBO Max, but that a release date could not be announced.

Unfortunately, we don’t know. Until now, all of Warner Bros. 2022 theatrical releases have been released on HBO Max 45 days after opening in theaters. However, now it seems Warner Bros. is going back on that strategy. Decider reached out to Warner Media for clarification and was told that movies’ HBO Max release date would now be on a “case by case basis,” rather than a strict 45-day theatrical window. Decider was also told Elvis would eventually be on HBO Max, but that a release date could not be announced.
Yes. After the movie’s theatrical run, Elvis will also be available to buy or rent on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, and more, beginning on August 9.
No. Elvis is not streaming on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon, due to the fact that the film will have a streaming home on HBO Max. If you want to watch the new Elvis movie at home, you’ll have to watch it on HBO Max or purchase the movie on VOD in August.
