If you’ve ever been tempted to stay at an Airbnb with a strange man to save money, go ahead and watch Barbarian, a new horror movie in theaters this weekend. You’ll be cured of that temptation real quick.
Written and directed by Zach Cregger, Barbarian stars Georgina Campbell as a woman who books a room in Detroit when she’s in town for a job interview. When she discovers the house has been double-booked, she opts to stay, against her better judgment. She has nowhere else to go. Unfortunately for her, the strange man already staying there (played by Bill Skarsgård) turns out to be so much worse than your average weirdo.
Barbarian promises both to scare your pants off and make you swear off Airbnb rentals for the foreseeable future. So far the reviews have been positive—according to the 96 percent rating on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes—so don’t wait to see this one.
Here’s what to know about where to watch Barbarian, and when you can expect Barbarian to be available on streaming.
For now, the only way to watch Barbarian is to see it in a movie theater, when it opens on Friday, September 9. You can find a showing near you via Fandango.
After the movie’s theatrical run, you’ll be able to purchase Barbarian on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu, and more. You’ll also likely be able to stream Barbarian on HBO Max and Hulu. Read on to learn more.
There is not yet an official digital streaming release date for Barbarian. But here’s what know.
Barbarian is a 20th Century movie, and a previous release from 20th Century, The Bob’s Burgers Movie, became available to stream on HBO Max and Hulu, as well as available to buy on digital platforms like Amazon for $19.99, after 45 days in theaters. If Barbarian follows a similar release strategy, you may be able to stream the movie at home as early as late October 2022.
Yes, but you’ll have to wait. Barbarian will likely go to HBO Max during the film’s “Pay 1 window,” which is the time period in which premium cable channels have exclusive rights to play the film. This is because even though Disney now owns 20th Century Studios, Disney is bound to a 10-year deal between 20th Century Fox and HBO that was signed in 2012. That deal runs through 2022—though HBO/HBO Max agreed to share co-exclusive rights with Disney+, meaning it’s possible that Barbarian will release on both HBO Max and Disney+ at the same time, possibly around late October 2022.
But it’s likely you’ll see Barbarian on Hulu instead of Disney+ because that’s where a previous 20th Century movie release, Bob’s Burgers, ended up. Hulu is also owned by Disney, and it would be a more appropriate home for the R-rated horror movie than Disney’s family-friendly streamer.
No. Barbarian will not be streaming on Netflix, due to the fact that it will eventually stream on HBO Max and Hulu. Sorry!
