Derry Girls Season 3 Finally Gets Netflix Release Date – Screen Rant

Three years after the release of season 2, and after production delays due to COVID, Derry Girls season 3 gets an official Netflix release date.
After much anticipation, the third and final season of Derry Girls finally gets a Netflix release date. Derry Girls was a big hit when it first aired on Channel 4 in the UK, and doubly so when it was released on Netflix in North America. The comedy series follows five teens in Northern Ireland during The Troubles in the '90s, as they rail against the old school ways of their Catholic girls' secondary school. Series stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, and Dylan Llewellyn will all be returning, although Coughlan's role was reduced due to Bridgerton obligations. Every episode is written by creator Lisa McGee and based on her own adolescence in Derry.
While Derry Girls season 2 aired from March 5 to April 9, 2019, in the UK, it premiered on Netflix a few months later on August 2. Now it's been over three years since the Netflix release of season 2, as the production of the third season was halted, as many were, by the COVID pandemic and ensuing lockdown. For TV viewers in Ireland and the UK, Derry Girls already concluded its run, airing from April 12 to May 18 earlier this year. In addition to the usual six episodes, season 3 contains an extra-long seventh episode that serves as the Derry Girls series finale.

Now, according to TVLine, Derry Girls season 3 has an official Netflix release date. Fans of the show's teen protagonists and their hijinks better get ready to mark their calendars. Netflix announced on Wednesday that all 7 episodes will drop on Friday, October 7.
Although only consisting of 19 episodes in total, the show has had a strong cultural impact. Beyond a glowing critical response, Derry Girls was the most-watched series in Northern Ireland since modern records began in 2002. The real town of Derry, which has become known for its politically charged art in the wake of The Troubles, has even painted a mural of the Derry Girls characters on the side of Badger's Bar, and the site has become a tourist attraction. The show has even been able to snag some impressive cameos in its final season.
The show has always done a commendable job of balancing the very real drama of its time and setting with absurd comedy. For American audiences, it may have even shone a light on a conflict they were less knowledgeable about. McGee has mentioned that a Derry Girls movie isn't out of the question for her band of dim-witted characters, but for now the series has run its course. While fans in the UK and Ireland have seen how Derry Girls wraps up, finally North American fans will be able to as well. Expect conversation surrounding the show to rise up once again when season 3 premieres, perhaps even reigniting talks of an eventual follow-up.
